The Maranao epic of Bantugan and the kingdom of Bembaran, sung for centuries around Lake Lanao, transcribed and translated in eight volumes by Mindanao State University; inscribed by UNESCO in 2005 as a masterpiece of oral heritage.
The Darangen is the epic of the Maranao of Lake Lanao. It runs to 17 cycles and some 72,000 lines, and is sung or chanted at weddings and celebrations. Its best-known stories follow the hero Bantugan and the kingdom of Iliyan a Bembaran.
Scholars of the Folklore Division of the Mindanao State University Research Center spent 10 years collecting it from Maranao elders and from kirim, handwritten Maranao songbooks in Arabic script, with support from the Toyota Foundation. The whole epic was published in 8 volumes from 1986 to 1988, in the original Maranao with an English translation. Hadji Lawa Cali and others transcribed and translated it, and Ma. Delia Coronel rendered the English in verse. Volume 1 opens with the story of the first ruler, Diwata Ndaw Gibon of Iliyan a Bembaran.
The Darangen was declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2002, and UNESCO proclaimed it a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.
