A Study of Their Practices and Beliefs
No longer sold new: look for it in a library, or for a used copy.
A Maranao sociologist’s survey of his people’s customs and beliefs, from birth to burial.
Esmail R. Disoma's study describes the practices and beliefs of the Maranao of the Lanao provinces. The Department of Sociology of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Mindanao State University published it in 1990, at 199 pages, with a bibliography. Library records list its subjects as Maranao ethnology, social life and customs, and rites and ceremonies. A later edition was printed by Ivory Printing and Publishing House in Iligan City in 1999.
Later scholars of Maranao literature cite the book for points of custom. It sets out the 4 principalities of the traditional homeland, Unayan, Masiu, Bayabao and Baloi, known together as the pat a pengampong ko Ranao. It records the belief that a girl with many suitors gains honour and prestige and is called kiyadayu'oan. And it describes kapaniwaka, the gift of raw food from the young man's parents to the girl's parents, which families of rank treat as a small wedding and as a way to win the girl and her kin.
