Clan Feuding and Conflict Management in Mindanao
Edited by Wilfredo Magno Torres III
Published free: the link opens the whole book.
The first systematic study of rido, the clan feuds that take more lives in Muslim Mindanao than the rebellion, with case studies from Lanao, Maguindanao, Sulu and Basilan and the ways communities settle them. Expanded edition from Ateneo de Manila University Press in 2014; the original is free to read.
This volume gathers studies of rido, the feuds between families and clans in Mindanao, marked by repeated acts of revenge. The research was done by Mindanao civil society groups and universities with support from USAID and The Asia Foundation, and edited by Wilfredo Magno Torres III.
The first 3 chapters inventory rido cases in 11 provinces, including Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur. Together they record 1,266 cases that killed over 5,500 people and displaced thousands. Other chapters look at how the Tausug, Maguindanao, Maranao, Sama and Yakan manage clan conflict, with case studies from Baloi, Lanao del Norte, and from Maguindanao and North Cotabato. The causes they find include elections, land disputes, crimes against chastity and simple jests.
The 2014 expanded edition adds essays, among them a comparison of Tausug and Corsican feuding, and an epilogue by Torres on rido management.
