The sultanate, the datus, the law and the ranks of Maguindanao society, set out from Spanish sources and the author’s ethnographic fieldwork.
Ghislaine Loyré wrote this short study of the political institutions of the Maguindanao sultanate. The Historical Conservation Society in Manila published it in 1991, as number 53 in its series. It forms Part 6, Volume 1 of the society's General History of the Philippines and runs to 83 pages.
Loyré, who also wrote as Ghislaine Loyré-de Hauteclocque, studied the Muslims of Mindanao over many years. Her other work includes A la recherche de l'Islam philippin, a book in French reviewed in Philippine Studies in 1994, and articles in that journal on the Spanish fort of Iligan from 1750 to 1760 (1987) and on foreign influences on Muslim rituals (1998).
