What the Subanen, an indigenous people of the Zamboanga peninsula who are not Muslim, thought of the Bangsamoro entity then being negotiated, and what they asked of it.
This study, prepared for a 2013 peace practitioners' research conference, asked how much the Subanen of Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay know of their old kinship with the Moros, and whether that shapes their view of the new Bangsamoro political entity. The authors are Mindanao State University and Cotabato City State Polytechnic College lecturers working with the Institute of Bangsamoro Studies.
The researchers used a survey of 324 Subanen, key informant interviews and focus groups. About 55% of respondents had little knowledge of Moro and Subanen kinship. Most gave the new entity low support, and those who knew less of the kinship supported it less.
The authors conclude that the Subanen hope for a peaceful end to the conflict but offer no plan of their own, and are mostly content with the status quo. They warn that the old partnership between the 2 peoples is weakening.
A paper for the 2013 Peace Practitioners’ Research Conference; the authors wrote it at the Institute of Bangsamoro Studies.
