Rebellion in Mindanao

No longer sold new: look for it in a library, or for a used copy.
Two journalists’ investigation of the MILF, the MNLF, the Abu Sayyaf and the Mindanao war at the turn of the century, from the camps and the back channels. The book most reporters on the region started with.
Marites Dañguilan Vitug and Glenda Gloria, 2 Filipino journalists, spent time in the conflict areas of Mindanao and Sulu to write this investigation of the Moro rebellion. It was published in 2000 by the Ateneo Center for Social Policy and Public Affairs with the Institute for Popular Democracy, and won a National Book Award in 2001.
The story opens with the 1967 Jabidah massacre, the killing of young Moro recruits trained for a secret plan to take Sabah, which the authors treat as the spark of the rebellion. They follow the foreign states that backed the rebels, including Libya and Malaysia, and the ties of clan, school and politics that ran through the MNLF, the MILF and the Abu Sayyaf. They also document the large sums released to Nur Misuari during his time in government.
A review in the Philippine Star praised the book's investigative reporting but noted that it says little about Mindanao before the conflict. The book has a bibliography and an index.
