A novella named for the town of Sumisip in Basilan, with four short stories.
This 124-page book by the Zamboanga writer Antonio R. Enriquez pairs a novella, "The Voice from Sumisip", with 4 short stories. Giraffe Books in Quezon City published it in 2003.
The novella is set among the Yakan of Sumisip in Basilan, where Enriquez spent what he called his "most beautiful years". Its central figure is Professor Jose, a folklorist doing research in Yakan country under Marcos's martial law. Through him the reader sees the Yakan world, its shamans and rituals, besieged by violent forces that come under the banners of religion. Jose's exposure to Yakan rites and beliefs shakes his Christian faith and his trust in science, and he finds himself caught between 2 worlds.
The 4 stories, "The Turtle-Egg Hunter", "Gatherer of the People", "Iba the Christian" and "Jainal the Pirate", go back to Naawan, the old name of Zamboanga, at the time of its founding. Francis Macansantos, reviewing the book in The Philippine Star in 2004, said they read like eyewitness accounts. He also noted that Enriquez had won the SEA Write Award for fiction in 2002.
