A survey-based study, done with the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, of how vulnerable young people in the ARMM are to violent extremism. It aims to give government agencies and communities an early picture to shape their response.
This study by the Institute for Autonomy and Governance asks how open young Muslims in the ARMM are to radicalisation and recruitment. It covers Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan and Sulu. The team surveyed 100 young people, held focus groups with youth leaders and ulama, interviewed 35 key informants and wrote 4 case studies of young people who had been in violent groups.
The 7 chapters cover the method, the history of extremism in Mindanao, the study sites, young people's views of Islam, their views on extremist groups and recruitment, and ideas for prevention.
The study found no large-scale radicalisation. Most young people knew basic Islamic teaching but little of the ideas extremists use. Only a minority sympathised with extremist groups, and far more feared them. Many named the loss of family and community ties as the worst effect.
