An Authorized Biography

The life of the founder of the Moro National Liberation Front, from Jolo and the University of the Philippines to Tripoli, Jeddah and the ARMM governorship, written with his cooperation.
Tom Stern, a medical doctor and visiting fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution, wrote this biography of the founding chairman of the Moro National Liberation Front. It draws on his private conversations with Misuari.
The first chapter opens with Misuari receiving the UNESCO Peace Prize and then with his detention in Manila on rebellion charges. The story then turns back to his childhood on an island in the Sulu archipelago, his scholarship to study political science at the University of the Philippines, his master's degree in Asian Studies in 1964, and his years as an instructor there until 1968. Later chapters cover the Jabidah massacre, martial law, the MNLF's struggle under 5 presidents from Marcos to Arroyo, his relations with the Organization of the Islamic Conference, and his term as ARMM governor.
A review by Maria Luisa Saministrado in Xavier University's Kinaadman journal found the book rich in historical detail. She suggested it would be more balanced with interviews of people who disagreed with Misuari.
