Maranao folktales translated into English, from the linguist who compiled the Maranao dictionary.
Howard P. McKaughan compiled this book of Maranao folktales translated into English. De La Salle University Press in Manila published it in 1995, at 141 pages, with a short bibliography. In the same year the press published a companion volume he compiled, Stories from the Darangen, drawn from the Maranao epic. Connie Jan Maraan reviewed the 2 books together in the Philippine Journal of Linguistics in 1996.
McKaughan was an American linguist who founded the Department of Linguistics at the University of Hawaii. He died in 2013, aged 91. He also did fieldwork in the eastern highlands of New Guinea. His colleagues remembered him above all for his work on Maranao. With Batua Macaraya he compiled a Maranao dictionary. After retiring he worked with the Iranun people of Sabah for the Summer Institute of Linguistics.
