36 news articles and essays in Maranao, each with an English translation, for learners of the language.
Maranao Reader is a book of 36 short reading passages in Maranao, each with an English translation at the back. Jason Lobel, a linguist of Philippine languages, prepared it, and Dunwoody Press of Hyattsville, Maryland, published it in 2009, with a preface and an introduction.
The passages are mostly essays and news-style articles of 2 or 3 pages, many about Islam and Maranao life. Titles include "Qur'an-Reading Contest in Lanao", "The Maranao Sultanates", "Maranao and Its Sister Languages", "Respect the Rules of War in Mindanao", "Islamic Banking", "The Head Scarf: Symbol of Freedom", "Is Islam a Violent Religion?", "The First Muslim to Fast in Outer Space" and "Blackout once again!". Others deal with Jabidah, EDSA and the Muslims, death customs, family values and Marawi as an Islamic city.
The same press published Maranao Dialogs and Drills, which Lobel edited, in the same year.
