A Filipino anthropologist’s essays against the romance of rebellion, on the South and on war zones elsewhere.
Arnold Molina Azurin follows the peace talks of the mid-1990s between the Ramos government and the Moro National Liberation Front under Nur Misuari. The book's prologue opens with a series of bombings around Zamboanga City and asks what they were meant to achieve. Later chapters take up the proposed Southern Philippines Council for Peace and Development, which provinces it should cover, how long it should last, and the objections raised by politicians from Mindanao.
The book has 25 chapters, with titles such as "A Battle of Nerves", "Into the Fray", "Turnaround Time" and "A Nonfinal Chapter", followed by an epilogue, a long appendix, notes on sources and an index. It also reaches back to earlier movements such as the Muslim Independence Movement founded by Udtog Matalam.
The UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies and the University of the Philippines Press published it in 1996. It runs to 360 pages. Library records file it under the MNLF, Muslim political activity and autonomy movements in Mindanao.
