History and Contemporary Struggles of the Bangsamoro People
Edited by Bobby M. Tuazon
No longer sold new: look for it in a library, or for a used copy.
Essays by Moro and Filipino scholars on the Bangsamoro’s history, the right to self-determination and the peace talks, from the Center for People Empowerment in Governance.
This reader was edited by Bobby M. Tuazon for the Center for People Empowerment in Governance (CenPEG), a policy centre based at the University of the Philippines Diliman. In his introduction Tuazon says the idea came in 2007, after CenPEG monitored the elections in the ARMM, at a time when the government-MILF talks had stalled over ancestral domain. The aim was to revive public awareness of the Bangsamoro struggle and give a reference for people's organisations, human rights groups, academics and the media.
Its 12 chapters include essays on colonialism and resistance, "multiple colonialism" in Moroland, the choice between independence and autonomy, ancestral domain as the core issue, neoliberal globalisation, and the Bangsamoro right to self-determination by Abhoud Syed Lingga. There is an annotated conversation with Nur Misuari, and chapters on Moro political dynasties, Muslim women in Palawan, and songs of resistance. Other writers include Julkipli Wadi, Temario Rivera and Kenneth Bauzon.
Long appendices reprint key documents, from the Qudarat-Lopez treaty to the Tripoli Agreement, the 1996 final agreement with the MNLF, and the 2008 memorandum on ancestral domain.
