The Continuing Terrorist Threat
Still in print: the link goes to a shop that sells it.
The Islamic State-aligned groups that took Marawi, what became of them afterwards, and the threat they still pose, by a Philippine security analyst.
Rommel Banlaoi, a Philippine security analyst who teaches international studies at Miriam College, edited this short volume on the 2017 siege of Marawi. It has 5 chapters by 3 writers on terrorism and security.
Kumar Ramakrishna traces how the "East Asia Wilayah" of ISIS came to Marawi. Banlaoi follows the Abu Sayyaf Group from its birth to its ties with al-Qaeda, ISIS and Jemaah Islamiyah, and its mix of terrorism and crime. Amparo Pamela Fabe writes 2 chapters: one on how the siege was financed, and one on a trauma counselling project for Maranao women and children displaced by the fighting.
In the closing chapter Banlaoi argues that terrorism in Mindanao is far from resolved despite the military victory. He calls for better use of anti-terrorism programmes, more public awareness and community-based approaches to the causes of extremism. A review in the Kyoto Review of Southeast Asia found the book timely but said some chapters needed deeper research.
