Armed Groups and Human Security Efforts in the Philippines
Soliman M. Santos Jr. and Paz Verdades M. Santos
Published free: the link opens the whole book.
Profiles of 14 armed groups in the Philippines, the communist and Moro fronts, the Abu Sayyaf and the clan militias among them, with what is known of their arms and their effect on the people around them. Free to read.
This book looks at the armed groups behind the Philippines' 2 main internal conflicts: the nationwide communist insurgency and the Moro insurgency in Muslim Mindanao. It was written by Soliman M. Santos Jr. and Paz Verdades M. Santos with other contributors, and edited by Diana Rodriguez. The South-South Network for Non-State Armed Group Engagement and the Small Arms Survey published it together.
Part 1 has thematic chapters on peace talks, ceasefires, counter-terrorism, the Abu Sayyaf, disarmament and reintegration, state and private armed groups, and small arms control. Part 2 profiles 14 rebel groups, among them the MNLF, the MILF, the Rajah Solaiman Movement and the Abu Sayyaf.
The book also explains how guns reach these groups: leaks from government stocks, open borders, local gunsmiths and weak rules. It argues that armed groups are part of the human security problem but must also be part of the solution.
Edited by Diana Rodriguez.
