This study compares 3 communities in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, looking at their history, the autonomy movement and social conditions. The research writers were Erlinda M. Burton, Cecilia Macabuac and Lourdes A. Wong of the Research Institute for Mindanao Culture at Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro. It was published around 2004 with Accion Contra el Hambre (Action Against Hunger) in Cotabato City and the European Commission, and runs to 123 pages with a short bibliography.
Burton, the first-named writer, was an anthropologist and archaeologist. She trained at Brigham Young University in Utah and took a doctorate in medical anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh in 1983, with a thesis on modern medicine among the Agusan Manobo. From Xavier she did field research across Mindanao for decades, much of it among indigenous communities, for clients from UNESCO to the Ford Foundation. She died in 2018.
