The Career of Datu Uto of Buayan
No longer sold new: look for it in a library, or for a used copy.
Datu Uto, who ruled the upper Pulangi against the Spaniards in the last decades of their rule, and what his rise and fall show of Maguindanao politics. Ileto’s first book, reissued by Anvil in 2007.
This is Reynaldo Ileto's study of Datu Uto, the ruler of Buayan on the upper Pulangi in the late 19th century. It grew out of his master's thesis at Cornell University in 1970 and was first issued in 1971 as a Data Paper of Cornell's Southeast Asia Program. Mindanao State University's University Research Center reprinted it in 1984 with a new foreword.
The book is at once a local history, an account of relations between Spain and Magindanao, and a biography of a Magindanao orang besar, or great man. Ileto rebuilds Uto's career by reading the contradictions in the Spanish colonial sources. He shows a leader who was more than the Spaniards' picture of a petty tyrant. At the height of his power the Spaniards dealt with Uto as an equal, and a treaty with Spain recognised his authority over Buayan and Buluan.
Ileto, who studied at the Ateneo de Manila and Cornell, later became known for Pasyon and Revolution.
